Second Wind CSA at Four Winds Farm is a 60-share Certified Organic, diversified vegetable production. We use a sustainable no-till farming model to produce delicious and wholesome food while also having a positive impact on the earth.
PEST CONTROL: We use the most reliable, least dangerous method of pest control there is: a plant-positive approach. We grow the healthiest seedlings we can, plant them into rich, high-organic matter soil, and monitor frequently for pests. Row cover is a major pest control tool on the farm.
NO-TILL: For over twenty years, Four Winds Farm has focused on building healthy soil by using permanent beds that get a healthy dose of compost every year and are never plowed. Without needing to plow, we can drastically cut down on tractor-usage, which is the major cause of soil compaction and other long-term problems. The soil at Four Winds has been able to develop strong, healthy microbial populations that support plant health.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC: A lot of farms out there have great growing practices. We believe in actually being certified because it both ensures a known level of ecological care and it also supports the burgeoning organic certification system. Organic stands out among other certification systems because it utilizes third-party professionals to judge the farm’s practices. Read more about our NOFA certification here.
SUSTAINABLE FARM OPERATIONS: We believe in sustainability and have minimized our footprint by using solar power, limiting tractor usage, and integrating animal systems to cut down on off-farm inputs. Several farm vehicles are veggie-oil-powered, and we source what few off-farm inputs we use (horse manure, straw, and hay) from farms just down the road. When it comes to seeds, we use only organic-certified, non-GMO, and majority heirloom seeds. Using heirloom seeds helps counter a rapidly depleting global seed diversity, while allowing us to explore a wider range of old favorites and new flavors.
