Week 21: Rootin’ on the Winter Veg!

Group A this week!

Hello friends!

With our first hard frost passing through last week we are on to welcoming in the winter veggies that we have been awaiting! Those along with our cut and hearty cooking greens will round out a nice share for this week of autumnal yumminess. Here’s what you’ll see:

  • Lettuce Mix
  • Spicy Mix
  • Arugula
  • Dill/Parsley
  • Kale/Chard
  • Lettuce Heads
  • Mustard Greens
  • Tatsoi/Broccoli Rabe
  • Winter Radish
  • Winter Squash
  • Beets
  • Carrots
  • Celeriac
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Peppers

I hope you are all pumped-up for some new flavors coming your way. Take advantage of the CSA Coalition links in the list to get ideas for some of the new funky items (like celeriac! – one of my absolute faves) or the mustard greens – which I keep catching an abundance of in the swap box!

A NOTE ON ONIONS: Our storage onions have finally made it into the share! I’m sorry to say that we had quite the onion failure early on in the season and so have been doing our best to assure a garlic, herbs, fresh onion type (leek/scallion) has made into each share to bring flavor to your plates. While our onions had trouble with damping off (getting too wet) in the spring – our fresh onions planned for the fall suffered a hit from the pesky allium leaf miner (link for those interested in learning more) – a pest relatively new to the area that all farmers are still learning and struggling to deal with. Despite that struggle – we’re happy to say the last shares will all come with those precious storage onions that have been long awaited.

Last week we pulled out all of our tomato plants and began laying compost on beds we’ll be seeding into next spring – bringing this whole season full-circle. We also finished off our regular market season last weekend and we are looking forward to enjoying a leisurely Saturday this week.

We’ll continue clearing out beds and putting things to rest this week as we move ever closer to the season’s end.

Thanks for being here!

❤ SAL
