CSA Week 16: Preserving memories, flavors, ideas and plans

Hello everyone!

I hope you are all basking in this beautiful time of year…sunny and 70 all week, can’t beat it! We’ve been blessed to have Anthony’s wonderful family in town this week and we will be embracing this glorious weather enjoying a pick-up picnic – pop over and meet the crew when you’re picking up your veg! AND make your own picnic possible this week with these beautiful goods coming your way!

I hope you all are enjoying the smattering of new/returning flavors that come with fall (delicata) and shoulder season (greens, turnips, and rads)! A refreshing bump of variety getting tossed onto your plate before we hunker down until the spring. Personally, I’m taking this time to really cherish each bite and starting to throw a few things in jars to bring a flavor pop to my pallet on a dreary winter day.

With the days slowing and lists shortening we set aside some time to make some saucy memories with Anthony’s family this afternoon. Here’s a look at the recipes we used and the process.

I plan to share these jars and memories with my friends and family back home in Illinois – giving them a little taste of my life out east, helping heal the cracks that grow so wide in the busy months of summer. And I cannot wait to pop one open over the winter and remember fondly the day we spent canning at Kumquat Cottage in Kerhonkson 🙂

In the same vein, the boys and I are starting to preserve a few things of our own. Some memories of the season past, notes of what we encountered this year (good and bad)… storing them away until next season’s crop planning session. A veggie note scrap book of sorts – no need for glue sticks or craft paper 😉 In short, we review each crop – every planting and take notes on how it did: if it grew well that time of year, if we had good germination, if it bolted quickly, if we had too little or too much, if it sold well at market, etc. These notes plus the feedback from our loving members 😉 will set us up to be best prepared for Spring 2020.
