Ending with Thanks

Final Distribution
GARDINER: 2-5pm Sunday
The farm is snowy and sloshy so wear appropriate footwear!

GARRISON: 4-7pm Monday
The forecast is low of 30 and precipitation so bundle up!

This unexpectedly deep snow fall is a fitting end to an intense, tumultuous growing season.
We have loads of row-covered sweet baby greens that are trapped under a foot of snow! Some greens can withstand it but there are only so many hours of daylight and energy in the cold to shovel them out. We’d have harvested them on Thursday, but temperatures never got above freezing!

As we’re trying to learn how to produce food, it’s tempting to rake ourselves over the coals speculating on what we could have done differently, what seemingly minor last-moment decision could have changed the outcome of a harvest. But so little is really up to us. We guess and experiment and wonder as best we can, and the land does what the land will while we learn to trust and continue on.

As this growing season ends, and our time with Second Wind along with it, I’m ending with thanks for all I have learned, experienced, messed up, lost, found, and grown.

We farm on land tended at different times by the Delaware, Erie, Iroquois, Mohawk, Oneida, and Seneca tribes. As we give thanks this week for all the nutrients this land has brought us, may we pause to remember the first inhabitants who farmed, hunted, learned, made mistakes, thrived, and were killed here, for all the lessons those fore-bearers taught and teach us today.
