Week 22: Winding Down

We’re still going, but definitely at a slower pace!
We’ve been moving through the fields, cleaning up plant matter and putting away irrigation supplies. Meghs has been composting beds to finish them up for the season and I’ve been getting started on all the record keeping that is neglected during the busy summer.
Work hours are fewer as the days are shorter and we’re moving with the land toward a time of rest, reflection, and dormancy.
Lots of pumpkin meals, hearty soups, and roasted roots eating!

What was great:
The hard and soft neck, plus the bed for spring green garlic are planted and composted to start rooting before it freezes.
Garlic is a sweet part of the Second Wind lineage–the new farmers come into the spring season with a beautiful crop they didn’t plant for themselves, then when they leave, they’ll plant it for the next folks. It calls to mind the Greek proverb:

A society grows great when [the old] plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.

And the Ella Wheeler Wilcox line:
With every deed you are sowing a seed, though the harvest you may not see.

In an ecosystem, we are all in big and small cycles of giving and being given to.

What we’re grateful for:
The beautiful purple color from snap dragon roots and summer savory flowers.

Having Anthony, Leslie, and Sam around to show them the ropes and introduce to everyone.

Here’s a great recipe from one of my favorite cookbooks, Cooking from the Farmers Market.
I made it vegan for a potluck and used coconut milk for the sage cream!

Roasted squash with honey and tahini to make pasta sauce, baked with mushrooms, mozzarella, and bread crumbs; roasted brussel sprout florets; jalapeno poppers; pea shoot salad.
