Week 18

Butterhead lettuce in all its beauty

Hello CSA members!

What a lovely first week of Fall it has been, full of cool nights, crisp mornings, and giant red moons. I know you won’t be shocked to learn that here on the farm this week we have been weeding. In fact, every single week all season long we have been weeding. On many weeks we spend more time with the weeds than with the crops. Our hands are calloused and dirt stained from a whole season of pulling and uprooting lambsquarters, purslane, wood sorrel and chickweed. Often, after a long day of weeding, I fall asleep and dream of more weeding. But this week feels different. For many of the beds, this week was their final weeding, never to be touched again before winter. Fall, the golden hour of the year, is here, and the weeds grow slower as the Earth gets sleepier. While I weed this week I can’t help but feel a little sentimental about all the good times the weeds and I shared this season and how their parting beckons winter’s arrival. So cheers to weeds and weeding them, and to seizing the season of Fall!

Arugula
Yukina Savoy

The turkeys Jay raises feast on leftover farm tomatoes, wander around in the grass under the sun while hanging out together, and are likely the happiest turkeys on the planet.

The turnips are looking eager to be eaten.

As do the beets!
