We’re just a few days away from July, and things here have been….well, wet! Lately, we’ve been planning our farm tasks around these rainy conditions. It’s been nice for direct seeding, as we’re able to get seeds in the ground without any worries about needing to keep the ground moist for their germination. However, the weeds grow so quickly at this time of year, and they seem quite happy with the rain! Our main method of weed control is hoeing, and it is a constant farm task that works much better on hotter, drier days (so that the weeds and their roots will shrivel up, instead of re-rooting). So every sunny day recently means we are out hoeing everything we can find! On the wetter days, we’re out in the fields with buckets, pulling out the weeds that grew just a bit too much.

We’ve been lucky this week to have a bit of help from Alison’s mom and sister, who came to visit from Texas! They both spent some time at the farm last year, too, so they were pros at helping us prep for market and pull out old broccoli raab plants. And a couple weeks ago, I recruited my boyfriend for a few hours of work to help put in a whole section of our tomato stakes. It is amazing what a difference more sets of hands can make, and Alison and I could not be more grateful to have such wonderful ‘volunteers.’

We have been seeing a lot of growth in our peas, summer squash, and cucumbers, and it is my hope that you will start seeing these items show up in your shares either this week or next. But here are some of the things we definitely expect to give out this week:

The winter squash is getting huge (I even saw a few small fruits on there already!)….Good thing the garlic harvest will be here before we know it!
