Hello members and friends,
We’re seeing the bounty of late summer on the near horizon! We’ve spent the week seeding and transplanting the fall crops, and watching the jewels of summer pick up. We will need to do a little fancy figuring Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to best distribute the harvest, since it’s just the beginning of some veggies, so the share may vary a little between the two pickups. The usual frenzy of July weeds are for the most part behind us, and the squash, tomatoes, and peppers are closing in on their potential. This week the tomatoes have started moving into production, although Sunday’s heavier-than-predicted rain led to some minor splitting. While imperfect, they’re still quite delicious. Don’t worry, the first round is always a little funky and we’re confident that all eight varieties are doing well.
Beans have been a little stubborn, but as you can see in the photos there are plenty of flowers, meaning there are many more to come for future harvests. The summer rain has been great for the salad mix and other greens- often we’d have to wait until cooler temperatures but we’re glad to see them doing well.
Since the cool weather of last week, we’ve been amused to discover bees still asleep in squash blossoms during morning harvest, reveling in their beds of golden pollen. It’s one of the joys of organic farming to witness those moments where natural ecosystems thrive.
As you saw in today’s email, cherries are available this week – $4.50 per quart. Please let us know by 9am on Tuesday.
