Second Wind CSA

Hi, from Wes Hannah and Bryn Roshong, Second Wind’s farmers starting in 2012!  We are a 40-ish  member organic CSA at Four Winds Farm in Gardiner, NY.  We grow our vegetables using the organic, no-till method put in place at Four Winds by farmers Jay and Polly Armour more than 15 years ago.   Jay and Polly had their own CSA for 15 years at Four Winds Farm, but in 2009 decided to hand it over as an independent operation to their former interns, Erin and Sam.  At the end of 2011, Erin and Sam decided it was time to move on and search for their own land, and so they handed down the CSA to us, also former interns of Jay’s.

Our share-season runs for 21 weeks, from the first full week in June through the last week in October.  We have a Tuesday pickup on the farm and a Wednesday pickup in Garrison, at the Hudson Highlands Land Trust office.

This blog is primarily for shareholders to use as a planning and recipe resource.  Please feel free to browse and comment regardless of your shareholder status!

    Hi Erin and Sam,

It was great to meet you guys last week. I accidentally deleted your contact info from my phone, so I thought I’d reach out to you from your website.

Could you send me your info again?

Thanks – hope the season is wrapping up well!

    Erin,
I’m living in NYC now and was wondering how the food shares at Second Wind work. I love to cook and would love even more to support an old friend’s business, but I wasn’t sure if you have drop off spots in the city or if you have to visit Second Wind (or live closer) for the distributions.

Hope you are well, the site is beautiful and good luck with the planning and planting season!

    Best,

Erin Phillips Bain (previously of Norman, OK)

    • Hi Erin! It’s so good to hear from you. Thank you so much for your interest in joining, however, our operation is so small that we don’t distribute in the city. We are 90 min north, so its really out of the way. However, a lot of my farmer friends do make the trip on a weekly basis. There’s a really great resource you should check out, JustFood.org, they basically set up CSA sites in all five boroughs. If you are ever planning on visiting the Hudson Valley please let me know and I’d be happy to show you the farm.

This is much belated, but thanks for the tips. I will be sure to let you know if we’re visiting your area!

        Best,
        Erin

I just wanted to share how I used the entire bunch of basil from last week. I made a quick and easy pesto sauce:
Remove the leaves from the basil bunch, and put into blender or processor. Add olive oil to moisten, and 2 cloves of fresh garlic. Add about a half of a block of cream cheese, softened. Blend until smooth. Finally I tossed in a handful of raw pine nuts, which softened the basil flavor. I poured it over pasta, but I bet it would be perfect over tortellini too!
